The $29/month Scaler plan's value proposition hinges entirely on the embedded replicas feature. Without it, Turso is just another SQLite-compatible managed database competing against free local SQLite files. With embedded replicas, Turso offers sub-millisecond read latency by placing database copies inside the application process — a capability that traditional client-server databases cannot match regardless of network proximity.

Turso's competitive positioning against Neon and PlanetScale is deliberately orthogonal: while those platforms target traditional client-server workloads with serverless billing, Turso targets edge-native applications where every millisecond of database round-trip matters. The SQLite foundation is both strength and limitation — it enables the embedded replica architecture that defines Turso's value but also imposes single-writer constraints.
